The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) applies to all private businesses and not-for-profit organizations in the province, including all health care providers operating private practices or businesses that are not part of the health authority system. It also applies to privately operated or not-for-profit residential or treatment facilities. This includes all of the following when they are in private practice or employed by a company:

  • Doctors, Naturopaths, Midwives, Nurses, Chiropractors
  • Therapists (for example, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists)
  • Opticians, Optometrists, Dentists,
  • Hearing health professionals
  • Psychologists and Counselling Psychologists
  • Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine
